Best company industry classification API

Exa has the highest measured industry correct-field yield: 96.1%, with 271/282 eligible company industries classified correctly. That is the end-to-end answer; the provider with the most complete data and the provider least likely to return a wrong label may differ.

Eight enrichment APIs received the same company-domain inputs. Their textual industry labels were normalized and judged against human-reviewed Ground Truth. This page separates correct yield, coverage, and accuracy when returned instead of hiding all three behind one “accuracy” claim.

Industry correctness, completeness, and writeback risk.

Correct-field yield is the primary ranking because it penalizes both missing and incorrect classifications. Coverage answers whether a provider returned an industry. Accuracy when returned answers how often a populated value was correct.

Assign exact NAICS, SIC, GICS, ICB, or TRBC codesNot measured hereRequires taxonomy-specific code Ground Truth

Taxonomy-aware does not mean anything vaguely related passes.

A provider passes when its label is the same industry, a synonym, an appropriate broader category, a narrower specialization, or an adjacent taxonomy label that still describes the company's primary business. Materially different sectors and contradictory specific subsectors fail. A generic manufacturing label does not replace a specialized research category simply because both sound technical.

The judge receives only the reviewed reference value and normalized provider value; it does not browse for new evidence while scoring. See the complete judging and Ground Truth methodology →

Industry labels are measured. NAICS and SIC code assignment is not.

Some enrichment APIs return NAICS or SIC codes, but this benchmark normalizes and scores the provider's primary textual industry or business category. It does not verify whether a six-digit NAICS code, a four-digit SIC code, or a GICS, ICB, or TRBC classification is exact. Those systems differ in hierarchy, update cadence, and classification purpose, so a credible code benchmark needs separate reviewed labels and should not inherit the winner on this page.

Compare industry performance across every scored field.

This is the main benchmark's per-field table for HQ location, industry, employee band, founded year, and LinkedIn URL. Each value is correct-field yield against the eligible reviewed references for that attribute. Read the main benchmark methodology for the frozen cohort and public evidence.

Which API has the most accurate company industry data?

Exa has the highest measured end-to-end industry yield at 96.1% (271/282 eligible company industries correct). If your priority is avoiding wrong writebacks rather than filling every record, compare accuracy when returned separately.

Does this benchmark test NAICS or SIC codes?

No. It tests normalized textual industry or business-category labels. NAICS, SIC, GICS, ICB, and TRBC code assignment require taxonomy-specific Ground Truth and are not scored here. The page discusses that boundary so the measured industry-label winner is not misrepresented as a code-classification winner.

What counts as a correct industry classification?

The judge accepts the same industry, a synonym, an appropriate broader category, a narrower specialization, or an adjacent taxonomy label that still describes the same primary business. It rejects materially different sectors, contradictory subsectors, and generic industrial labels used in place of a specialized research category.

How do I enrich a company list with industry classifications?

Send the same normalized company identifier—usually the primary domain—to each candidate API, map responses into one field contract, and evaluate coverage and correctness separately. Before CRM writeback, define whether you need a readable industry label or a specific code system such as NAICS; they are different evaluation tasks.
